Who is high-dose B12 methylcobalamin for?
- Vitamin B12 is an extremely important and sensible food supplement for vegetarians and vegans, as the foods they eat contain little or no vitamin B12. Normally, a daily intake of 2.5 µg of vitamin B12 is sufficient. However, it is the only vitamin for which the required intake can vary by a factor of 100 to 1000 in order to cover the individual daily requirement. From the age of 50, the absorption of vitamin B12 from food often decreases, which increases the need for vitamin B12.
- People with reduced absorption or increased consumption of vitamin B12 often require high doses of vitamin B12 to achieve the recommended blood levels. However, a high-dose dietary supplement is also useful for temporarily replenishing the vitamin B12 stores in the liver if too little vitamin B12 has been taken in through food for a long time. Vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin is safe at a dosage of 500 µg, as confirmed by the European Food Safety Authority.
- To determine the vitamin B12 status, a urine and/or blood test with the following parameters is useful: The active vitamin B12 is best measured as holotranscobalamin (holo-TC) in the blood. A sensitive early indicator is methylmalonic acid, or MMA for short, which can be easily measured in urine or blood.
