Tea tree is an evergreen tree and has nothing in common with the tea bush (Camellia sinensis), but is a myrtle plant that is native to Australia. Of the more than 300 varieties of Melaleuca, only Melaleuca alternifolia produces the unique tea tree or tea tree oil. In terms of ingredients, it is primarily the cineole and terpinen-4-ol content that is tested and assessed. Generally speaking, a cineole content of less than 5 % and a terpinen-4-ol content of at least 30 % is of a quality that combines skin-friendliness with optimum effectiveness.
