Asparagus officinalis, the vegetable asparagus, is mainly cultivated in warm and temperate zones. As the cultivation of asparagus is quite complex and is harvested by hand, it is one of the more expensive types of vegetable, but asparagus also provides a variety of valuable ingredients. In addition to important vitamins, the vegetable also contains several minerals and fibre, which contribute to satiety. The artichoke originally comes from the warm regions of the Mediterranean. Until the French Revolution, the artichoke was a sign of wealth and could be found in every well-heeled household of the French landed gentry.

At the end of the 19th century, the artichoke was also introduced to the USA, where it even triggered a mafia war.
