Simple and effective heat treatment for blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction

One of the main problems with eyelid margin inflammation is the solidification of secretions from the meibomian glands. Heat treatment liquefies the secretion and promotes blood flow to the eyelid margins. It is therefore extremely important for restoring the function of the meibomian glands.

However, the heat treatment is only successful if a warm and humid climate is maintained at a constant temperature of approx. 45 degrees for 5 - 7 minutes. POSIFORLID® eye mask is a self-heating eye mask that fulfils these requirements in a special way and can be reused approx. 90 times.

The warmth of the mask

• softens the crusts on the edge of the eyelid,
• improves the blood supply to the eyelids and

How to use

1. Moisten two cotton wool pads with normal tap water. Push a damp cotton pad into the opening at the top of the eye mask on each side so that the cotton wool lies exactly in front of the oval windows. Close the push button on the eye mask.
2. Use the simple folding system to activate the eye mask. Folding is done as follows: There is a metal disc in both orange sections of the eye mask. Hold each disc with both hands and then try to "bend" or "crease" it. This bending process causes a sound wave, which causes the liquid orange contents to take on a solid form within a few seconds, generating heat. The temperature is around 45 °C. After approx. 5-7 minutes, the heat gradually decreases.
3. You place the eye mask with the open side on your eyes and pull the ribbon over your head. You can use the fastener to shorten the strap until it feels comfortable. Do not tighten too tightly; the eyes must not be exposed to too much pressure.
4. Remove the eye mask after a good 5 minutes. This period can be longer, but never shorter.
5. Cleansing the eyelids is an important step in the treatment of eyelid margin inflammation and dysfunction of the meibomian glands. Remove the cotton pads from the eye mask and use them to massage and clean the edges of the eyelashes by gently rubbing the cotton pads between the eyelashes. To apply pressure to the lower eyelid, look upwards and to move the upper eyelid, look downwards. Place your index finger parallel to the edge of the eyelid, close to the eyelashes. Apply pressure to the eyelids in the direction of the eye. This will remove the sebum so that the tear film stabilises and the discomfort decreases. In the case of a chalazion, massage the chalazion immediately after applying the eye mask. The heat will make the sebum more fluid. When massaging, slowly squeeze out small amounts of the sebum that has become fluid from the blocked sebaceous gland. This will cause the hump to gradually disappear.

If you have a sty, you do not need to massage it. The warmth of the eye mask will speed up the maturation process. As soon as the pimple breaks open, the discomfort will disappear. It will usually disappear after a few days. However, it is also possible that the bump will remain without causing pain. It will then settle down and become encapsulated. It will then turn into a hailstone.

Boiling after use

After use, you must boil the eye mask for 10 minutes in a pot with plenty of boiling water (approx. 2 litres) to prepare it for the next application. The contents of the eye mask will then become liquid again. Please only measure the time when the water is really boiling. Keep the water boiling gently during this time, so do not switch off the heat source. Avoid dry boiling and damage: Keep a close eye on the boiling time using a kitchen timer. Use a slotted spoon or a large spoon to place the eye mask in the water or remove it. Do not boil the cover as this will harden the material. You can clean the cover with a lukewarm lye solution.

What to avoid

• Do not use the eye mask immediately after boiling. The eye mask will still be far too warm and could cause burns. Wait at least half an hour until the eye mask has cooled down sufficiently.
• Do not heat the eye mask in the microwave or directly on a hotplate - Do not remove the eye mask from the pot with a sharp object; this could damage it. Use a slotted spoon or a flat spoon instead.
• Do not allow children to boil the eye masks without adult supervision.
• Do not use the POSIFORLID® eye mask if you notice that the eye mask is leaking or damaged. If the orange content unexpectedly gets into your eyes or onto your skin or clothing, rinse with lukewarm running water for a few minutes.
