Otovent® is a nasal balloon (medical device) for ventilating the Eustachian tube to relieve negative pressure in the middle ear.
Otovent® consists of two parts, a latex balloon and a polypropylene nose piece, which are joined together before use. It is a non-sterile, reusable medical device.
- Field of application: Otovent® is intended for the treatment of negative pressure in the middle ear.
Who can use Otovent®?
Otovent® can be used by adults and children from the age of 3. Children must always be treated under adult supervision.
How does Otovent® work?
Otovent® helps to equalise the pressure in the middle ear by inflating a balloon through the nose using the autoinflation technique. Auto-inflation with a nasal balloon increases the nasal pressure and thus allows the Eustachian tube to open.
Dosage form
Combination pack (1 nasal piece + 5 balloons)
Application
- For tympanic effusion (blocked ear): During the first week of treatment, Otovent® should be used at least three times a day (morning, midday, evening) with one blow into each nostril. After one week, Otovent® should be used at least twice a day (morning and evening). Treatment may last longer than one month and several months of treatment may be required for maximum clinical effect. Consult your doctor after 2-3 weeks to decide whether treatment should be continued.
- For relief of symptoms after flying, diving or hyperbaric chamber treatment: When used in conjunction with flying, Otovent® should be applied 3-4 times as soon as descent begins. If symptoms persist, treatment can be continued after landing. Otovent® can be used before/after diving and during/after a hyperbaric chamber treatment to relieve symptoms.
Step-by-step instructions:
- The nose piece must be clean.
- Connect the nasal balloon over the flat end of the nose piece.
- Hold the spherical part of the nose piece firmly against your left nostril with your left hand. Hold your right nostril together with your right index finger.
- Inhale deeply through your mouth, then close your mouth and inflate the nasal balloon by blowing through your left nostril until the nasal balloon is the size of a grapefruit (10-12 cm).
- Swallow a few times with the inflated nasal balloon still pressed firmly against your nostril.
- Repeat the process through your right nostril. It may take some practice to learn how to use Otovent®. Slightly pre-stretching the nasal balloon before first use can facilitate ventilation.
Care: After use, clean the nose piece with a mild detergent and rinse with clean water. Dispose of the nasal balloon after it has been used 20 times.
