What role does vitamin D play?

Vitamin D plays an essential role in maintaining bones, teeth and muscle function. It also ensures a healthy immune system , which strengthens the body's own defences.

Sunlight is essential for the formation of vitamin D in the body. Many people (around 50% of the world's population) suffer from a vitamin D deficiency , which is particularly common inthe winter months and in regions north of 42 degrees latitude (Rome and Boston), as well as in older people who rarely go out in the sun.

Sunscreens inhibit the production of the vitamin, which is why vitamin D supplementation is also recommended in summer. A vitamin D deficiency can usually only be insufficiently compensatedfor through normal nutrition.

Vitamin D is the generic term for a category of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins D1 to D5). The positive influence of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) on health has been proven.
