Nicorette® freshmint 4 mg lozenges are a medicine used to relieve withdrawal symptoms and reduce the craving for nicotine.

This medicine is used to relieve withdrawal symptoms and reduce the craving for nicotine. You may experience both of these when you are trying to give up smoking altogether or are initially trying to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke. The treatment is intended for adult smokers aged 18 and over.

Nicorette 4 mg lozenges are suitable for smokers with a low level of tobacco dependence, e.g. smokers who have their first cigarette more than 30 minutes after waking up or who smoke up to 20 cigarettes a day.

This medicine can help you to give up smoking completely straight away or, initially, to smoke less before you give up smoking altogether. If you think you can give up smoking completely straight away, you should do so. However, if you feel that this is too big a step, you may wish to start by reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke before giving up smoking altogether.

Nicorette lozenges relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms, including the urge to smoke – that is, the discomfort that occurs when you stop smoking. When your body suddenly stops receiving nicotine from tobacco, you may experience unpleasant sensations known as withdrawal symptoms. These include irritability, anger, low mood, anxiety, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, increased appetite or weight gain, cravings for a cigarette, waking up during the night or sleep disturbances. The nicotine in Nicorette lozenges can help to alleviate or even prevent these unpleasant sensations and the urge to smoke.

To increase your chances of giving up smoking, you should also seek advice and support.

Directions for use

This medicine is intended for use in the mouth. It is placed in the mouth, where it dissolves and releases nicotine, which is absorbed by the body through the oral mucosa.
Place a lozenge in your mouth and move it from one side of your mouth to the other from time to time until it has completely dissolved. This generally takes less than 20 minutes. You must not chew the lozenge or swallow it whole. You should not eat or drink whilst you have a lozenge in your mouth.

Adults aged 18 and over – smoking cessation with immediate cessation:

The aim is to give up smoking immediately and to use the lozenge to reduce the urge to smoke.

Start by taking 8 to 12 lozenges a day. Whenever you feel the urge to smoke, place a lozenge in your mouth and let it dissolve.
Continue using the lozenges in this way for up to 6 weeks, then gradually reduce the number of lozenges you take each day.
Once you only need 1 or 2 lozenges a day, you should stop using them altogether. After that, you may still occasionally experience a strong craving for a cigarette. If this happens, you can use a lozenge again.

Adults aged 18 and over – reducing smoking with the aim of eventually giving up:

The aim is to gradually replace some of your cigarettes with a lozenge. Once you have achieved this, you can then give up cigarettes altogether with the help of the lozenges. Eventually, you will also stop using the lozenges.
If you experience a strong urge to smoke, use a Nicorette lozenge instead of a cigarette to satisfy your craving. Reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke per day as much as possible. If, after 6 weeks, you have not been able to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke each day, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
As soon as you feel ready, you should stop smoking completely. Follow the advice given above for quitting smoking straight away. Do this as soon as possible. If your attempt to give up smoking completely has not been successful within 6 months of starting to use this medicine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Notes: Do not exceed the stated dose. Follow the instructions carefully and do not use more than 15 lozenges in a day (24 hours). If you feel you will need to use this medicine for longer than 9 months in total, you should seek advice from a doctor or pharmacist.

Ingredients

The active ingredient is nicotine. Each lozenge contains 4 mg of nicotine (as nicotine resinate).
The other ingredients are: Tablet core: mannitol (Ph. Eur.), xanthan gum, peppermint flavouring (contains gum arabic (E414), peppermint, menthol and eucalyptus flavourings), sodium carbonate, sucralose (E955), acesulfame potassium (E950), magnesium stearate (Ph. Eur.) [vegetable] Film coating: hypromellose (E464), peppermint flavouring (contains peppermint, menthol and eucalyptus flavourings), titanium dioxide (E171), sucralose (E955), acesulfame potassium (E950), polysorbate 80 (E433), microcrystalline cellulose, muscovite, coated with titanium dioxide (E171).
