Nicorette® 2mg Icemint chewing gum belongs to a group of medicines used to help people give up smoking. The active ingredient in Nicorette is nicotine, which is absorbed into the body through the oral mucosa.
The supply of nicotine via Nicorette ensures that the withdrawal symptoms caused by nicotine withdrawal do not occur, or at least occur in a significantly milder form, thereby reducing the patient’s craving for cigarettes. These withdrawal symptoms primarily include irritability, restlessness, anxiety, increased appetite, difficulty concentrating and trouble falling asleep, which in many cases lead patients to take up smoking again. Nicorette acts as an aid and makes giving up smoking easier, even in difficult cases, although the necessary motivation, willpower and perseverance are essential prerequisites for any smoking cessation programme.
If you want to give up smoking or cut down on your cigarette consumption, Nicorette will support you in this and can therefore be used:
- to help smokers who wish to give up smoking
- as an aid for smokers during specific periods when smoking is not possible or desirable (temporary abstinence)
- to reduce cigarette consumption among smokers who do not wish to, or are unable to, give up smoking.
The success rate can be improved with additional counselling and supportive measures. If you smoke fewer than 20 cigarettes a day, Nicorette 2 mg chewing gum is suitable. If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, Nicorette 4 mg chewing gum is more suitable.
Nicorette® chewing gum is a sugar-free nicotine gum designed to help you give up smoking. Chewing the gum actively releases the active ingredient, helps to distract you and alleviates your cravings for cigarettes as well as other withdrawal symptoms that may occur when you stop smoking. These include, for example, increased irritability and nervousness, increased appetite, weight gain and sleep disturbances.
Benefits
- Sugar-free, mint-flavoured nicotine chewing gum to help you quit smoking
- Alleviates the urge to smoke by getting you active: chewing releases the active ingredient from the gum
- Chewing gum containing 2 mg of nicotine for smokers of up to 20 cigarettes a day
How it works
NICORETTE® chewing gum releases nicotine when chewed, which is absorbed through the oral mucosa. Around 50% of the total nicotine content in the chewing gum is absorbed by the body. Accordingly, a user absorbs approximately 1 mg of nicotine from a 2 mg piece of chewing gum, and approximately 2 mg from a 4 mg piece. When chewing a 2 mg piece of chewing gum, blood nicotine levels reach about one-third of those achieved by smoking cigarettes; when chewing a 4 mg piece, they reach about two-thirds.

Usage
Adults and older people:
You can chew a piece of gum whenever you feel the urge to smoke. To increase your chances of successfully giving up smoking and to avoid relapses, it is important that you chew a sufficient amount of Nicorette gum every day. Nicorette has been shown to be just as effective for smokers over 60 as it is for younger age groups.

Dosage for immediate cessation
For smokers who smoke up to 20 cigarettes a day, the 2mg nicotine chewing gum is suitable. If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, you should use the 4mg nicotine chewing gum.
- Step 1: Weeks 1–6 – Approximately 1 NICORETTE® piece of chewing gum per hour. The optimal amount is 8–12 pieces of nicotine chewing gum per day; a maximum of 24 pieces per day is permitted.
- Step 2: Weeks 7–12 – Reduce the number of pieces of chewing gum to 0 over the following 6 weeks.
Treatment should last for at least 4–6 weeks. Thereafter, the number of pieces of chewing gum should be reduced by the 12th week. Treatment lasting longer than 6 months is not recommended. Relapses may still occur even after six months. In such cases, it is advisable to keep a piece of chewing gum to hand.
