- Lactoferrin is a protein found in almost all mammals and, in particular, in their breast milk. Lactoferrin is able to specifically bind iron and release it again where it is needed. All the cells in our body – including fast-growing tumour cells and bacterial cells – rely on iron as a building block.
- Our body therefore uses lactoferrin to deprive pathogens, such as bacteria, of the iron they need to survive. As bacteria are essentialy dependent on iron, this depletion of iron has an indirect antibacterial effect. It can be released by leukocytes (white blood cells) and is therefore an essential component of our immune system.
- On closer inspection, this protein is a natural, gentle substance produced by the body itself and therefore has no side effects. However, lactoferrin still exists in the shadow of antibiotics and immunosuppressants.
- Fortunately, all mammals use the same lactoferrin, making it possible to extract lactoferrin from cow’s milk and use it in humans. Untreated cow’s milk, for example, contains approximately 100 mg of lactoferrin per litre. A pack of 60 capsules, each containing 120 mg, therefore corresponds to the lactoferrin content of approximately 70 litres of untreated cow’s milk!
