How to use
Simply place the clinical thermometer under the tongue and wait until the galinstan, the measuring liquid, has stabilised its position. The temperature reading is then taken using the integrated scale and noted down if necessary. Before a new measurement, the thermometer should first be cleaned, disinfected and carefully shaken downwards to bring the liquid back to its starting point.
Using an analogue clinical thermometer
Using an analogue clinical thermometer, also known as a glass thermometer, is simple and straightforward. Here are the basic steps for using an analogue clinical thermometer:
- Cleaning: make sure the thermometer is clean before use. If necessary, clean it with mild soap and water or alcohol swabs.
- Shaking: Shake the thermometer to lower the liquid (alcohol or galinstan) in the capillary tube to a temperature below the expected body temperature. Hold the thermometer firmly and shake it vigorously in an oscillating motion until the liquid column sinks.
- Positioning: Select the measurement site (oral, rectal or axillary) and position the thermometer accordingly: Oral: Place the thermometer under the tongue and close the mouth. Ensure that the thermometer is in good contact with the tissue under the tongue and that the mouth remains closed. Rectal: Lubricate the tip of the thermometer with a suitable lubricant and insert it carefully about 2.5 cm into the anus. Ensure that the patient is relaxed to avoid injury. Axillary: Place the thermometer in the armpit and close the arm firmly across the chest to ensure close contact between the thermometer and the skin.
- How long to measure: Leave the thermometer in place for the recommended time (usually 3-5 minutes) to get an accurate reading.
- Reading: Remove the thermometer and read the temperature from the liquid column on the scale.
- Cleaning and storage: After use, clean the thermometer again with mild soap and water or alcohol swabs and store it in its protective case.
