How can the nipple shield help with cracked or sore nipples?
Breastfeeding is a very special time, but it's not always easy. You may suffer from sore or even cracked nipples, especially in the first few days after giving birth when you and your baby are still learning to breastfeed. After all, your sensitive nipples have not yet become accustomed to the pressure and regular sucking of your baby. This discomfort should decrease over time. If this is not the case, seek advice from a breastfeeding counsellor or midwife. In the meantime, wearing a nipple shield (also known as a breast cup) between feeds can prevent clothing from rubbing against your sensitive nipples, helping them to heal.
Treating different types of nipple problems
Although sensitive or sore nipples are not uncommon in new mums, some discomfort can also be related to the breastfeeding position or your baby not latching onto the nipple properly. It is therefore always a good idea to seek advice from a breastfeeding counsellor or midwife. If your nipples bleed, you experience severe pain when breastfeeding or you notice symptoms of a breast infection such as mastitis, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.
How does the nipple shield work?
You wear the nipple shield inside your bra to prevent fabric from rubbing against sensitive or sore nipples. This allows your skin to regenerate and promotes healing. If you are using a nipple shield, it is a good idea to wear a nursing bra, as this is usually a little 'roomier' than a normal bra and the nipple shield will fit in better. However, you don't have to worry about the Medela nipple shield showing under your clothes: The inconspicuous shape ensures a natural look. You can wear the nipple shield permanently between feeds. However, do not wear it at night in bed, as this can exacerbate the symptoms of sore nipples.

How to use
The Medela nipple shield consists of two parts: a soft, flexible silicone membrane that feels comfortable on sensitive skin and an outer shell with ventilation openings that allow your skin to breathe. They are easy to put together:
- Place the membrane on the outer shell and snap it into place all the way round.
- Place the assembled nipple shield in your bra so that the opening of the membrane is exactly over your nipple. The holes should point upwards.
Some leaked breast milk may collect in the nipple shield during wearing. Do not feed your baby with this milk, but pour it away when you remove the nipple shield.
