There is a great deal of hype surrounding weight-loss injections, EAAs (essential amino acids) and GLP-1 boosters. But how does the regulation of our sense of satiety actually work, and what does GLP-1 actually mean?

Hunger is a subjective craving for food intake. Alongside the psychological phenomenon of appetite, hunger is subject to a complex physiological regulatory loop. In particular, blood sugar levels are directly linked via receptors in the stomach and liver connection with the hypothalamus in the diencephalon. The hypothalamus is the primary regulatory centre for our sense of hunger. Furthermore, our sense of hunger is also controlled by hormones such as insulin, leptin and GLP-1. GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) triggers an early and sustained feeling of satiety, promotes the release of insulin and inhibits glucagon, an antagonist of insulin. Studies show that essential amino acids (EAAs) taken orally, particularly leucine, cause a similar GLP-1 activation to an injection of insulin-regulating medication.

• Adults: Before the first meal of the day, add one heaped measuring spoonful to a glass, top up with 250 ml of water, stir well and drink.
