Cold sores, also known as cold sores, sun blisters or lip herpes, are the symptom of an infection with a virus from the herpes virus family. Many people often suffer from cold sores several times a year, which in some cases are signalled several hours before they appear by a slight burning sensation, tightness or tingling in the affected area.

Cause

Most people come into contact with herpes viruses in the course of their lives. The initial infection usually goes unnoticed and occurs in childhood, often before the age of six. Infection can occur via direct contact with the vesicle fluid or saliva of people suffering from cold sores, but also via droplets (speaking, sneezing, coughing) and infected objects such as napkins, glasses or cutlery. The viruses enter the body via small skin or mucous membrane wounds, multiply in cells in the upper layers of the skin and cause the familiar blisters. Some of the viruses travel along nerve fibres to the nerve ganglia, a collection of nerve cell bodies. There they can no longer be attacked by the body's own immune system. The viruses can therefore remain dormant in the nerve ganglia for many years. Under certain circumstances, the viruses are reactivated, migrate along the nerve fibres back to the surface of the skin and cause blisters to form again.

Reactivation of the viruses can be triggered by a weakening of the body's immune defences, e.g. by an infectious disease or fever, by strong sunlight (skiing in winter) or other skin irritations, by psychological stress or, in women, in connection with hormonal changes (pregnancy, menstruation). If someone has to take medication that suppresses the immune system, this can also promote the occurrence of cold sores.

Treatment options

There are several ways to treat cold sores. What they all have in common is that they should be used as early as possible, i.e. as soon as the first symptoms become noticeable. In addition to tablets, which must be prescribed by a doctor, various creams and gels are available today.

Our product

For the treatment of cold sores, we recommend ®LiPACTIN GEL from Louis Widmer. Ask a specialist for advice.
