Lactofem® lactic acid vaginal suppositories are a medical product for maintaining and restoring a natural pH value in the vagina by acidification with lactic acid.

Lactofem® Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories are suppositories for use in the vagina that contain a mixture of lactic acid and sodium lactate. The vaginal suppositories can be used to maintain or regulate the natural pH value in the vagina

• in adult women
• during pregnancy and breastfeeding
• in girls after consultation with a doctor.

If there is a tendency to vaginal infections, long-term preventive treatment can be carried out without hesitation

Areas of application

Lactofem® Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories are used to maintain and restore a natural pH value in the vagina. Maintaining or acidifying the vaginal environment with lactic acid supports the growth of typical vaginal bacteria (lactic acid-producing bacteria) and at the same time has an unfavourable effect on the growth of pathogens in the vaginal area. Lactofem® Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories can therefore be used as a preventative measure if you are prone to vaginal infections and as a supplement to medication for vaginal infections.

How do Lactofem® Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories work?

The cells in the vaginal skin contain glycogen, which is released by lactic acid bacteria in the vagina after the normal exfoliation of the cells and fermented into lactic acid after being broken down into sugars by the lactic acid bacteria. If the lactic acid is present in sufficient quantities, a naturally acidic environment with a pH value of 3.8 - 4.5 prevails in the vagina. These are unfavourable conditions for the growth of undesirable bacteria. An acidic vaginal environment therefore helps to prevent bacterial infections.

The acidic vaginal environment can be disturbed by various external factors, causing the pH value to rise above 4.5. Possible influencing factors include bodily secretions such as period blood or seminal fluid, a reduction in lactobacilli due to antibiotics and hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, breastfeeding or due to the use of female sex hormones. Under such conditions, the growth of unwanted germs in the vagina is favoured. These germs can originate from the area around the vaginal entrance (e.g. anal region) and ascend into the vagina or be transmitted during intimate intercourse, for example. The consequences can be an overgrowth of the natural lactobacilli flora by these germs and a vaginal infection.

For women who are prone to repeated vaginal infections, the vaginal application of lactic acid is helpful in many cases to support the self-regulation of the acidic pH value.

How to use

• The single dose is one vaginal suppository once a day in the evening before going to bed.
• A vaginal suppository is inserted deep into the vagina once a day, preferably lying on your back with your legs slightly apart. In order to prevent premature expulsion of the vaginal suppository, it should be used in the evening before going to bed.
• To remove the vaginal suppository from the film strip, please pull the two films at the tip of the suppository apart as shown in the following illustration.
• If the vagina is relatively dry, the vaginal suppository can be moistened under running water before insertion to make it even easier to insert. Please use a panty liner during use, as watery discharge may occasionally occur due to the particularly good solubility of the vaginal suppositories.
• Duration of use: The duration of use is generally 5 - 7 days. To regularly maintain a normal pH value in the vagina, e.g. in women with a tendency to vaginal infections, Lactofem® Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories can also be used two to three times a week over a longer period of time without hesitation.
