Ichtholan® 20 % ointment is an over-the-counter medicine; it has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and stimulates blood circulation. It is used to help boils come to a head and to treat superficial inflammatory skin conditions.

Bacteria use small breaks in the skin as a ‘point of entry’ and cause an inflammatory reaction in the underlying tissue. This can lead to severe pain and an unpleasant feeling of pressure.
ICHTHOLAN® 20% ointment (contains ammonium bituminosulphonate, an active ingredient of natural origin):

Directions for use
- Apply a layer of ICHTHOLAN 20% ointment about as thick as the back of a knife to the affected area of skin and cover it with a dressing. The dressing should be changed daily. Each time the dressing is changed, any ointment residue remaining on the skin must first be washed off before a new dressing is applied.
- Method of administration: For use on the skin. Unless otherwise prescribed, ICHTHOLAN® 20% ointment should be applied thickly to the areas of skin to be treated and covered over a large area with a dressing. The dressing should be changed daily. Each time the dressing is changed, any ointment residue should be washed off before re-applying ICHTHOLAN® 20% ointment.
- Duration of use: When used as a continuous dressing, ICHTHOLAN® 20% ointment should not be left in place for more than 3 days. Otherwise, the duration of use depends on the success of the treatment. The frequency of application of ICHTHOLAN® 20% ointment depends on the nature and severity of the condition, as well as on the skin’s reaction.

- 1 g of ointment contains 0.2 g of ammonium bituminosulphonate (Ichthyol®).
- The other ingredients are: yellow petrolatum, lanolin, purified water.
