- The pomegranate or grenadine (lat. Punica granatum) is a deciduous tree species of the loosestrife family (Lythraceae) and is native to western and central Asia. In Cypriot mythology, the pomegranate is a symbol of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and is considered to be a fertility agent due to its numerous seeds.
- The red fruit is eaten as fruit, although eating the seeds from the inside can be a very tangy affair and is not everyone's cup of tea. Everyone is certainly familiar with the pomegranate in the form of grenadine syrup, which used to be made exclusively from fruit from the Caribbean island of Grenada. The juice is boiled down with sugar to make a syrup that gives various cocktails their fruity flavour.
- The peel and juice have been used for centuries as colouring for oriental carpets. In "fine" cuisine, the seeds are often used to decorate delicious flavours.
- Scientific interest has increased enormously in recent years due to its ingredients. Pomegranate polyphenols are said to have 3-4 times more antioxidant potential than red wine or green tea.
