In zinc citrate, zinc is bound to the salt of citric acid. This basic, organic compound of zinc has a high bioavailability and good solubility and is also particularly well tolerated. Zinc is the second most common trace element in the body and is involved in various biochemical processes. Zinc therefore contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism. It is a necessary component of some enzymes and ensures that metabolic processes run smoothly. The trace element is present in all body fluids and tissues, especially in the muscles (approx. 60 %) and bones (approx. 30 %). Higher concentrations are also found in hair, nails, skin, sexual organs, the retina of the eye and in the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Zinc thus contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal skin.
Zinc contributes to normal carbohydrate metabolism, normal acid-base metabolism and normal DNA synthesis. Zinc also supports normal cognitive function. It plays a role in the process of cell division and thus also promotes sperm production. Zinc also contributes to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood. In this context, it contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative stress, to normal fertility and to normal reproduction. Finally, zinc also contributes to the normal function of the immune system. As the zinc supply from foods of animal origin is usually better, as they have higher levels and increased bioavailability - plant-based foods often contain phytic acid, which binds zinc and reduces its absorption in the intestine - there is a risk of an inadequate supply, particularly for vegans and vegetarians
