Even a slight deficiency of vitamin B12 leads to mood disorders such as general weakness, tiredness, memory impairment, muscle flaccidity and (mucus) skin problems. Vitamin B12 is therefore a sensible supplement to the daily diet.
This vitamin has the following functions:
- Amino acids: Methylcobalamin contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism.
- Red blood cells: In addition to folic acid and iron, vitamin B12 contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells.
- Nervous system: Vitamin B12 is required for the synthesis of myelin, the building material of the nerve sheaths, therefore vitamin B12 contributes to the normal function of the nervous system.
- vegans and vegetarians, a daily intake of vitamin B12 makes sense, as methylcobalamin is mainly contained in animal foods. In older people, absorption is often limited and taking certain medications can increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.
