Pyridoxal-5-phosphate is the metabolically active form of vitamin B6. In the body, vitamin B6 is involved in more than 160 biochemical reactions and plays an important role in human metabolism as a component of numerous enzyme systems. Among other things, it contributes to normal energy metabolism as well as normal protein and glycogen metabolism and plays a role in regulating hormonal activity. Vitamin B6 is particularly important in homocysteine metabolism and in the synthesis of cysteine. Here, the enzyme cystathionine b-synthase catalyses the conversion of homocysteine to cystathionine, which is then converted into the amino acid cysteine. Vitamin B6 is required as a cofactor for these reactions. Vitamin B6 therefore contributes to normal cysteine synthesis and normal homocysteine metabolism.

In addition, vitamin B6 contributes to the normal function of the nervous system, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal psychological function. Finally, this vitamin supports the normal formation of red blood cells and also contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
