As an essential trace element, manganese is a component of many enzymes involved in energy conversion. It is important for the formation of hormones, bone and connective tissue. The human body contains between 10 and 40 mg of manganese, most of which is stored in the bones. Foods of plant origin in particular are rich in manganese, such as nuts, wholemeal products, pulses and green vegetables.
