- The parent plant of maca is Lepidium meyenii walp. (Brassicaceae family). The plant is basically a distant relative of our cress. Lepidium meyenii has been used as a vegetable plant for at least 2000 years. Its underground organs are bulbous and have a high nutritional value. The plant is highly resistant to frost, which is why it is the only food plant that occurs naturally and is cultivated at altitudes of 3500 to 4500 metres in the Andes. The above-ground green parts of the plant have been used by the inhabitants of the region for centuries as a vegetable in the kitchen. The roots are only partly used as food, although they have great nutritional value. Instead, they are used in rituals associated with fertility and masculinity.
