Lutein belongs to the group of carotenoids and is found in high concentrations in the yellow spot of the retina (macula), but also in the lens of the human eye. This pigment plays an important role as a filter substance against excessive light irradiation and thus protects our eyes from photochemical consequences. As an antioxidant, lutein takes on the role of neutralising agent and promotes the adjustment of the oxido-reductive balance in our eyes. Lutein also has a positive effect on age-related impairments of the macula. If the retinal cells in the macula die off, vision in the central field of vision is impaired. This complaint is often associated with a low lutein content in the centre of the retina.
As our body cannot produce lutein, an essential substance, itself, it must be supplied from outside through food. Lutein 20 mg GPH capsules contain the clinically tested and recognised branded raw material FloraGLO® with lutein from the marigold (Tagetes erecta). FloraGLO® Lutein contains the natural form of lutein that is also found in common vegetables and therefore has excellent bioavailability and stability. Lutein 20 mg GPH capsules also contain vitamin E and sodium ascorbate, the salt of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Vitamin C and vitamin E contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Vitamin C contributes to the regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E.
