L-threonine is an essential amino acid. These are amino acids that the body cannot produce itself. They should therefore be supplied to the body in sufficient quantities with food or through dietary supplements. A permanent deficiency or lack of essential amino acids can impair the metabolism. Because L-threonine is also used as an additional source of energy during heavy physical exertion, an increased need for this amino acid can arise in such situations.
