L-citrulline is named after the watermelon (citrullus vulgaris), whose rind contains a particularly large amount of it. The basic amino acid is a non-essential amino acid. This means that the human body is able to produce L-citrulline itself. L-citrulline is part of the urea cycle and fulfils important functions in the body. After oral intake, L-citrulline is converted to the amino acid L-arginine with the help of two enzymes.
