Fish oil 500 mg GPH capsules contain 500 mg fish oil and 10 mg vitamin E in a soft gelatine capsule. Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. The content of EPA is 18% and that of DHA 12%. Both acids are an essential component of the cell membrane and are involved in the formation of tissue hormones. Humans are dependent on a sufficient supply of long-chain fatty acids as they can only produce them to a limited extent themselves. Unsaturated fatty acids play a key role in triglyceride levels. They regulate the amount of fat and cholesterol in the blood.
- Omega-3 fatty acids are initially found in plankton, the food of fish. Sea fish accumulate long-chain fatty acids in fish meat (fillet) as a result of this diet. Fatty fish such as mackerel, herring, wild salmon and tuna are particularly rich in omega-3 fatty acids. The two most important omega-3 fatty acids are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The ratio of these two acids in fish is approximately 1.5:1.
