Fennel belongs to the umbellifer family (Apiaceae) and is native to the Mediterranean region. The fennel fruits contain the essential fennel oil, which is rich in the odorant trans-anethole and is said to have various properties. Other components of fennel oil are limonene, camphor and pinenes. The leaves and fruits also contain many flavonoids, fats, proteins and organic acids.
