Folsan 0.4mg tablets are a medicinal product for the intake and prevention of folic acid deficiency states when sufficient folic acid intake from food is not possible.

Folic acid (vitamin B11) is of central importance for the metabolism of all living cells. It is essential for normal cell growth and normal cell division, e.g. for normal haematopoiesis. In healthy people, folic acid is normally ingested in sufficient quantities with food. However, folic acid compounds from food are about half as poorly utilised by the human body as pure folic acid. In addition, folic acid is quickly destroyed by cooking. However, the body's folic acid reserves are relatively low. If the human organism is not sufficiently supplied with folic acid, deficiency symptoms can occur after just 4-5 months (e.g. megaloblastic anaemia, a maturation disorder of the red blood cells, which can also be caused by vitamin B12 deficiency). The folic acid contained in Folsan 0.4 mg tablets is rapidly and almost completely absorbed by the small intestine and can therefore counteract the development of folic acid deficiency symptoms.

Taking folic acid supplements 4 weeks before to about 12 weeks after the onset of pregnancy can reduce the risk of a 2/5 neural tube defect occurring in the newborn. A neural tube defect is a serious malformation in the newborn that occurs in early pregnancy.

Folsan 0.4 mg is used:

For the prevention of folic acid deficiency states when sufficient folic acid intake with food is not possible.
For the prevention of neural tube defects in newborn babies, even with a complete diet.

How to use

Prevention of folic acid deficiency: Take 1 tablet of Folsan 0.4 mg daily. The duration of use is decided by the doctor treating you.
To reduce the risk of a neural tube defect in the newborn: Pregnant women and women who wish to have children take 1 tablet of Folsan 0.4 mg daily from about 4 weeks before to 12 weeks after the start of pregnancy.
Under certain circumstances a higher requirement may be necessary. Please contact your doctor about this, who will carefully determine the correct dosage for you.
Route of administration: Swallow Folsan 0.4 mg tablets whole with a little liquid at mealtimes.

Ingredients

The active ingredient is: folic acid. 1 tablet contains 0.4 mg folic acid per tablet.
The other ingredients are Lactose (76.6 mg), sucrose (8.3 mg), maize starch, macrogol 4000, stearic acid and magnesium stearate.
