True galangal (Alpinia officinarum), also known as galangal root, lesser galangal, galangal or Siamese galangal, belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The dried root (Galangae rhizoma), which contains many essential oils as well as pungent substances and flavonoids, is often used as a herbal drug. The galangal root stimulates digestion. It has antispasmodic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and is used for loss of appetite, digestive complaints such as flatulence and bloating as well as mild cramp-like complaints in the gastrointestinal tract.
