Muira Puama, known in German as the ‘potency tree’, is a plant species belonging to the order Santalales and the family Olacaceae. The wood and roots of the tree are used to produce the pharmaceutical substance Muira puama lignum, known as ‘potency wood’. Potency wood was already used as an aphrodisiac by the indigenous peoples. Aphrodisiacs are named after the Greek goddess Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Aphrodisiacs are substances that stimulate or restore sexual desire and potency.
