The eucalyptus tree (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) belongs to the Myrtaceae family (myrtle family). Another name for the eucalyptus tree is fever tree. Its most important active ingredient is the essential oil (eucalyptol). The strongly aromatic-smelling essential oil and bitter-tasting eucalyptus leaves are said to loosen thick mucus from the bronchial tubes. The essential oil of eucalyptus is used in numerous cold remedies, baths, inhalants and liniments.
