Coltsfoot leaves were already used by Dioscorides and Pliny. The area of application is also reflected in the Latin name for coltsfoot – ‘Tussilago farfara’ – ‘tussis’ = ‘cough’ and ‘agere/ago’ = ‘to drive away’. The mucilage and tannins it contains have beneficial effects on coughs and bronchial complaints; the mucilage in particular forms a protective layer over the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract.
