Diptam (Dictamnus albus) belongs to the rue family (Rutaceae). Diptam leaves and dried diptam roots are frequently used in folk medicine to stimulate menstruation, as a diuretic and for stomach complaints. The root contains dictamnin, saponin, essential oils, sugar and wax. In Hildegard von Bingen’s nutritional therapy, diptam powder is used as a remedy for arteriosclerosis and elevated blood lipid levels; it is simply sprinkled over food or stirred into soups.
