Blackcurrant - an extremely precious berry shrub
- The blackcurrant - ribes nigrum in Latin - is also known as black currant in Austria. Botanically, it belongs to the gooseberry family.
- The original wild form was found in temperate latitudes. The blackcurrant was domesticated in monastery gardens in the Middle Ages and from there conquered domestic gardens. Cultivation has now spread it worldwide.
- They thrive very well in moist and nutrient-rich soil. The blackcurrant is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to two metres high. Three to five-lobed leaves sit on its finely hairy shoots. Even the buds exude a tart, intense odour.
- The black berries are known for their tart and sour flavour, which becomes pleasantly sweet when sufficiently ripe. Berry lovers should plant them in a sunny location. The berries develop a more aromatic, sweeter flavour there. Blackcurrants can remain on the bush for a long time without spoiling.
- The berries are rich in vitamin C, anthocyanins, fruit acids, flavonoids, phenolcarboxylic acid derivatives, monosaccharides, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and pectin. Just 100 g of blackcurrant contains twice the daily requirement of vitamin C. The vitamin C content of the berry buds is even higher than in the ripe berries. There is no healthier berry fruit than blackcurrant!
