The ConvaTec Aquacel® Ag Foam sterile adhesive foam dressing offers an innovative solution for the treatment of exuding wounds. With its unique technology combining silver ions and hydrocolloid fibres, it promotes wound healing.
Aquacel® Ag Foam is an antimicrobial foam dressing containing silver that provides reliable protection of the wound margins. It combines the comfort and absorbency of a foam dressing with the power of silver ions and the wound-healing properties of the gel-forming Aquacel® Ag wound contact layer.
Aquacel™ Ag Foam foam dressings have been developed for use as a primary dressing.
Aquacel™ Ag Foam foam dressings may be used under medical supervision for the treatment of exuding acute and chronic wounds that are at risk of infection or show signs of infection.
Indications
Aquacel® Ag Foam is suitable for the management of acute and chronic, moderately exuding wounds that are infected or at risk of infection:
- Wounds with an existing infection or an increased risk of infection
- Leg ulcers
- Venous stasis ulcers
- Leg ulcers of mixed aetiology
- Arterial ulcers
- Pressure ulcers
- Diabetic
- Foot ulcers
- Surgical wounds

Aquacel® Ag Foam can be used as a primary dressing for superficial wounds and, for wounds 3 mm deep or more, as a secondary dressing in combination with a wound filler, e.g. Aquacel® Ag+ Extra.
AQUACEL® Ag Foam Product Benefits
- Conforms precisely to the wound bed and eliminates uncovered areas (dead spaces) where bacteria and biofilm can grow.
- Traps excess exudate, protects the intact surrounding tissue and prevents maceration through vertical fluid absorption.
- Ensures an optimal moisture balance within the wound to maintain a warm, moist wound healing environment, whilst the gel helps to minimise pain during dressing changes.
- Reliably reduces bacteria through the controlled and continuous antimicrobial action of silver ions.

Directions for use
Before applying the wound dressing, the wound and the surrounding area should be cleaned with a suitable wound cleansing solution – for example, sterile saline solution.
Preparation and application of the dressing:
- Select the size and shape of the dressing so that the central absorbent pad (the area within the adhesive window) is 1 cm larger than the wound area.
- Remove the dressing from the sterile packaging, taking care not to touch the wound-contact surface or the adhesive surface (where applicable). Please peel off the protective film before using the adhesive foam dressing.
- If necessary, the foam dressing can be cut to size.
- Hold the foam dressing over the wound and align the centre of the dressing with the centre of the wound. Place the wound pad directly onto the wound. For the adhesive foam dressing, smooth down the adhesive edge.
- Take care not to stretch the dressing when applying it. Smooth out the adhesive edge on the adhesive version. Ensure that the joints are sufficiently flexed to allow the patient to move freely.
- If the foam dressing does not have an adhesive edge, or if the adhesive foam dressing with an adhesive edge has been cut to size, it should be secured with a suitable fixation dressing or adhesive tape.
- For anatomical areas that are difficult to dress, such as the heel or sacral region, the special shapes (heel, sacral) can be used.
- After covering the wound, dispose of the unused part of the product.
Removing the foam dressing:
- The foam dressing should be changed when clinically indicated (e.g. exudate, bleeding, increasing pain). The recommended maximum wear time is seven days.
- The wound should be cleaned at appropriate intervals.
- To remove the foam dressing, apply gentle pressure to the skin and lift.
Duration of use:
- Aquacel™ Ag Foam dressings can be worn for up to 7 days. If clinically indicated, the dressing must be changed sooner. The need for Aquacel™ Ag Foam should be reassessed after 14 days and, if necessary, an alternative wound care option should be considered.
