Lithium occurs somewhat less frequently in the earth's crust than zinc, but more frequently than cobalt, tin and lead. Lithium salts are also commonly found in brines, the concentration can be up to one per cent. Like many organisms, plants also benefit from low doses of lithium: in sunflowers and maize, for example, a concentration of 5 mg lithium per dm³ led to growth promotion. Low concentrations of lithium also stimulated plant growth in amaranth.
