Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is one of the water-soluble vitamins of the B group. It is an essential component in many metabolic processes and is jointly responsible for the complete utilisation of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Panthenol (a precursor of pantothenic acid) is used externally in ointments and creams.
