What is calcium citrate?

Calcium citrate is the form of the mineral calcium bound to citric acid. As an organic compound, it has very good bioavailability and is therefore particularly well absorbed by the body.

Your body contains around 1 kilogramme of calcium, which puts the mineral at the top of the list in terms of quantity. Almost the entire calcium content is stored in your bones, which makes sense as it is essential for maintaining normal bones and teeth. But calcium can do even more: muscle function, energy metabolism and the transmission of signals between your individual nerve cells are all dependent on your daily calcium requirement being met.

The recommended daily intake of calcium (daily requirement) for adults is around 1000 mg, while the reference value of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) is slightly higher for growing adolescents. Sports training or the menopause in women can also lead to an increased requirement. The supply is very individual, as many people today are lactose intolerant or avoid dairy products, which are the best sources of calcium. A supplementary supply of calcium capsules can therefore be useful.

Calcium citrate or calcium carbonate - what's the difference?

Calcium is available in different compounds, the best known of which are calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. Calcium carbonate is a salt of carbonic acid, which also occurs very frequently in nature, for example in corals, snail and mussel shells or limestone. Calcium citrate is calcium bound to citric acid (citrate) and it should be noted that citric acid is also a naturally occurring substance in the body. It has better bioavailability than calcium carbonate and is also gentler on the stomach, making it suitable for sensitive people.

Calcium capsules to cover an increased daily requirement

Calcium citrate from Pure Encapsulations® contains organically bound, pure calcium with optimum bioavailability. This makes it easy for your body to absorb and process so that it arrives wherever it is needed. The calcium capsules are very well tolerated and are particularly suitable for people with increased requirements, lactose intolerance and those who do not eat dairy products. The recommended daily dose provides a good amount of 900 mg calcium to cover the daily requirement.
