What is calcium citrate?

Calcium citrate is the form of the mineral calcium bound to citric acid. As an organic compound, it has very good bioavailability and is therefore particularly well absorbed by the body.

Your body contains around 1 kilogram of calcium, making this mineral one of the most abundant in the body. Almost all of this calcium is stored in your bones, which makes sense as it is essential for maintaining normal bones and teeth. But calcium can do even more: muscle function, energy metabolism and signal transmission between your individual nerve cells all depend on your daily calcium requirement being met.

The recommended daily intake of calcium (daily requirement) is around 1000 mg for adults; for growing adolescents, the reference value set by the German Nutrition Society (DGE) is slightly higher. Physical exercise or the menopause in women can also lead to an increased requirement. However, calcium intake varies greatly from person to person, as many people nowadays are lactose intolerant or avoid dairy products, which are the best sources of calcium. Taking calcium supplements in capsule form may therefore be advisable.

Calcium citrate or calcium carbonate – what is the difference?

Calcium is available in various compounds; the best known include calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. Calcium carbonate is a salt of carbonic acid that also occurs very frequently in nature, for example in corals, snail and mussel shells, or limestone. Calcium citrate is calcium bound to citric acid (citrate), and it is important to note that citric acid is also a substance that occurs naturally in the body. It has better bioavailability than calcium carbonate and is also gentler on the stomach, making it suitable for people with sensitive stomachs.

This allows your body to easily absorb and process it, ensuring it reaches wherever it is needed. The calcium capsules are very well tolerated and are particularly suitable for people with increased requirements, as well as for those with lactose intolerance or who avoid dairy products. The recommended daily dose provides a good amount of 900 mg of calcium to meet your daily requirements.
