In Asia, Auricularia auricula is known as Mu-Err, Black fundus, Chinese morel or cloud ear mushroom. Auricularia is a popular edible mushroom in Southeast Asia, but it is also native to our region. It has been used for over 1,500 years and has become an integral part of Asian cuisine. Auricularia also has a long tradition as a dietary supplement.
Auricularia prefers to grow on old branches of the elder tree, which has earned it the name "elder mushroom" or "Judas ear". This name refers to its auricle-like shape and to the legend that Judas is said to have hanged himself from an elder tree after Jesus' condemnation. Today, Auricularia is grown in organic quality on indoor culture media and is therefore independent of environmental factors.
