What do you actually know about selenium?
That's right - it's an important trace element.
But do you also know about organic selenium?
From a scientific point of view, selenium is a so-called chalcogen, which translates roughly as "ore former". This name goes back to selenium's "little brothers", which you certainly know much better than selenium itself: Oxygen and sulphur.
As oxides or sulphides, they are important components of ores, which also explains the name.
However, all of these elements are actually important components of life. Oxygen is even the most common element in the human body, accounting for over 60% on average. Even if the proportions of sulphur at 2‰ and selenium at 0.2 ppm are significantly lower, they are in no way inferior to oxygen in terms of their importance for the organism.
However, the body cannot simply absorb sulphur and selenium as minerals, whereas oxygen is simply inhaled or drunk with water. Instead, it needs their organic form, in which both sulphur and selenium are already part of a natural biomolecule and therefore achieve a much higher bioavailability than in their mineral form.
In its organic form, selenium usually takes on the function of sulphur. In most cases, it replaces the sulphur in the amino acids L-methionine and L-cysteine, resulting in the so-called seleno-amino acids. This changes the structure and function of the proteins containing these seleno-amino acids at certain points in such a way that they differ fundamentally from the sulphur-containing proteins. Selenium usually forms the active centre of biochemical processes in the body.
In this way, selenium is not only essential for the growth of hair and nails. By supporting the formation of thyroid hormones, it is also important for the immune system due to its properties as a free radical scavenger. As if that wasn't enough, selenium is important for spermatogenesis in men.
But how can biologically active organic selenium be obtained from natural mineral selenium? One solution is provided by organisms that one would perhaps associate most with health: Brewer's yeast. They go wild for selenium minerals and convert them into organic selenium. This in turn can be utilised very well by the body.
With SelenPureCaps from ZeinPharma® you get 150 µg of high-quality organic selenium in just one capsule a day. Thanks to the high bioavailability of organic selenium, you support your body every day by giving it what it needs for so many things in the body.
