Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a sulphur-containing fatty acid that occurs naturally as a coenzyme in the mitochondria. Here, alpha-lipoic acid plays an important role in energy metabolism. ALA is used in the body to break down carbohydrates and generate energy for the tissues and organs. The highest concentration of ALA is found in the liver for energy production and detoxification. ALA can also easily cross the blood-brain barrier and thus protect the brain from the harmful effects of free radicals.
