D-mannose is a bioactive simple sugar (chemically known as a monosaccharide) that occurs primarily as a natural component of cell membranes and mucous membranes in our bodies. Mannose is also found in small quantities in our food, for example in various fruits. Unlike related types of sugar, such as the better-known glucose, D-mannose is not metabolised by the body; instead, it enters the bloodstream very quickly, travels directly to the kidneys and, from there, passes unmetabolised into the bladder, where it is excreted.
