D-mannose is a bioactive simple sugar (chemical monosaccharide) that occurs mainly as a natural component of cell membranes and mucous membranes in our body. Mannose is also found in small quantities in our food, for example in various fruits. Unlike related types of sugar, such as the better-known glucose, D-mannose is not metabolised in the body, but passes directly into the kidneys via the bloodstream within a very short time and from there, unused, into the bladder, where it is excreted again.
