Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, yet screening tests can help prevent the disease at an early stage. Colonic polyps are considered a precursor to bowel cancer and cause virtually no symptoms. They may bleed, but the amount of blood is so small that it is not visible to the naked eye. Samples should not be taken during or up to 3 days after a period, or if the patient is suffering from haemorrhoidal bleeding or blood in the urine. Alcohol, aspirin or other medicines taken in excessive amounts can cause gastrointestinal disturbances leading to occult blood in the stool. These substances should not be taken in the 48 hours prior to sample collection. No dietary restrictions are necessary prior to using the FOB rapid test.

Who is bowel cancer screening suitable for?

Colorectal cancer screening is suitable for everyone, both women and men, from the age of 40. The National Screening Committee recommends a colonoscopy every 10 years and an annual faecal occult blood test from the age of 45. If there is a known family history of the condition, screening may need to be carried out earlier or at shorter intervals.

Instructions for use

Before the test, allow the test cassette, sample and buffer to reach room temperature (15–30 °C).

1. The stool sample should be collected in the stool collection device. It is important to use the stool collection device in all types of toilets to prevent contamination of the sample with any chemicals and thus avoid falsifying the result.
2. Unscrew the cap from the sample collection tube and insert the spiral rod into the stool sample at a minimum of 3 different random points. Do not collect the stool sample by ‘scooping’. Seal the sample collection tube tightly with the screw-on cap and shake it vigorously to mix the sample with the extraction buffer.
3. Allow the foil pouch containing the test to reach room temperature before opening it. Remove the test cassette from the foil pouch and carry out the test as soon as possible. The most reliable results are obtained when the test is carried out immediately after opening the foil pouch.
4. Hold the sample collection tube upright and open the cap. Snap off the tip. Turn the sample collection tube upside down and dispense 2 full drops of the extracted sample (approx. 80 μL) into the sample well (S) of the test cassette. Then start the timer. Avoid air bubbles in the sample well (S). 
5. Read the result after 5 minutes. Results must not be read after 10 minutes have elapsed.
