Suprasorb® P + PHMB: An antimicrobial polyurethane foam dressing containing polyhexanide (PHMB). PHMB is a proven antiseptic that kills a broad spectrum of microorganisms. The dressing is sterile and non-adhesive.

Suprasorb® P + PHMB non-adhesive antimicrobial foam dressing is a non-adhesive, sterile antimicrobial wound dressing consisting of a hydrophilic polyurethane foam designed to absorb exudate. The wound dressing is laminated with a printed, waterproof, low-friction polyurethane film that forms a barrier against germs. The wound-contact layer of the dressing features a transparent, perforated film that protects the wound bed from sticking to the dressing by preventing granulation tissue from entering the pores of the foam. This reduces trauma when the dressing is removed. The perforations in the wound-contact layer allow exudate to be absorbed and prevent excess fluid from causing maceration of healthy skin.

Suprasorb® P + PHMB non-adhesive antimicrobial foam dressing facilitates the management of wound exudate and microbial contamination, thereby reducing wound pain during the healing process. Suprasorb® P + PHMB non-adhesive antimicrobial foam dressing contains the antimicrobial substance polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB, polyhexanide), which kills germs and inhibits their growth. Based on in vitro studies, the PHMB released in the presence of wound exudate is an antimicrobial agent that remains effective for up to seven (7) days against a broad spectrum of microorganisms commonly found in bacterial colonisation and wound infection.

Use

Wound preparation:

  • If necessary, clean the wound area with a non-toxic cleansing solution, e.g. a saline solution. Dry the area surrounding the wound thoroughly before applying the wound dressing.
  • If necessary, apply a dressing for deep wounds in accordance with the instructions for use of the respective dressing.

Application of the wound dressing:

  1. Select a Suprasorb® P + PHMB non-adhesive antimicrobial foam dressing that is slightly larger than the wound. If necessary, the dressing can be cut to the size of the wound (using sterile scissors).
  2. Centre the dressing over the wound, ensuring that the printed side faces away from the wound, and carefully apply the dressing to the wound.
  3. Secure the wound dressing with a suitable tape, e.g. Curafix® H, to ensure it does not slip. Ensure that the tape is only applied to the edges and does not cover the entire wound dressing, as this may impair its effectiveness. If the wound dressing is used under a compression dressing, no tape is required, as the compression dressing holds the wound dressing in place.
  4. Dispose of any remaining dressing material due to the risk of contamination.

Dressing changes and removal of the dressing:

  1. Suprasorb® P + PHMB non-adhesive antimicrobial foam dressing can remain on the wound for up to 7 days, depending on the patient’s condition and the degree of exudate. Initially, it may be necessary to change the wound dressing every 24 hours or whenever good wound care practice requires.
  2. Carefully remove the dressing from the wound bed and dispose of it in accordance with local procedures and guidelines.
  3. If necessary, clean the wound with a suitable wound cleanser before applying a new dressing.

Notes: Suprasorb P + PHMB can be used as a secondary dressing for wounds at risk of infection and infected wounds as part of regular antimicrobial therapy. When dry, Suprasorb P + PHMB can be easily cut to the size of the individual wound

Ingredients

The material is soft and pliable. The special surface texture of the wound-contact layer of Suprasorb P + PHMB is gentle on easily damaged surfaces such as healing wounds. The semi-permeable PU backing layer maintains a moist wound environment. It is bacteria-proof and waterproof.
