A millennia-old connection between humans and the olive tree

Olive trees can reach an astonishing age of over 1,000 years and survive in regions with low rainfall. Humans have been using the olive tree since the 4th millennium BC, making it one of the oldest known cultivated plants. There is far more to these trees and their leaves than meets the eye. Whilst the fruit is often consumed as olives or olive oil, the leaves of the olive tree can be processed into a highly concentrated extract or tea.

Olive leaf extract: a natural source of potent oleuropein

Oleuropein is a potent antioxidant found in various parts of the olive tree, including the roots, bark, fruit and, in particular, the leaves. Oleuropein plays a crucial role in the survival of the olive tree. Not only does it act as a protective shield against free radicals, but it also safeguards the tree from damage that could be caused by insect infestation, bacteria, viruses and fungi. The high concentration of oleuropein boosts the olive tree’s resilience to such an extent that it is capable of reaching a remarkable age of up to 1,000 years.

Oleuropein is of particular interest in terms of its antioxidant effect. In olive leaves, this super-antioxidant is found in a concentration approximately 3,000 times higher than in olive oil. This is because the tree retains its leaves for around five years and must therefore provide them with particularly effective protection against pests and fungi during this time. Extracting oleuropein from fresh olive leaves makes it possible to make this powerful yet versatile plant compound available to humans.

The oleuropein content in our olive leaf extracts varies depending on the product. In the BIO FORTE 100% olive leaf extract, the oleuropein content is standardised at 10 per cent, which corresponds to a concentration of 12,000 mg per 100 ml. This standardisation ensures consistent quality and potency of the extract.

In our other variants (NATURA, PREMIUM and STANDARD), where the leaves come from wild olive trees, the oleuropein content varies according to the natural conditions of the plants. In the case of the wild olive tree, the leaves are primarily harvested from mature trees, as these have a higher oleuropein content. The manual harvesting of olive leaves is not only environmentally friendly but also crucial to product quality.

For our liquid olive leaf extract variants, we do not use a dried extract, but exclusively 100% pure extract produced from fresh leaves.

The various forms and concentrations of our olive leaf extracts offer a wide selection and allow you to choose the olive leaf extract that best suits your individual preferences and needs. The “PREMIUM” and “STANDARD” variants contain vegetable glycerine (derived from coconuts), which, thanks to its sweet taste, helps to mask the bitterness of the extract.
