The medicinal mushroom maitake (Grifola frondosa) is a species of mushroom from the giant mushroom family. Its distribution area ranges from the subtropics to more northern, temperate zones. It has been collected and eaten in Japan since 3000 BC, where it is one of the most important edible mushrooms alongside the shiitake. In Asia, and particularly in China, it has long been widely used in traditional Chinese diets. In addition to ergosterol and polysaccharides, it contains many other vital substances.

Maitake extract also contains vitamin C (Ester-C®) with its many properties, in particular as a contribution to normal collagen formation for normal bone and cartilage function and to the normal function of the immune system.

The special Ester-C® contains no free acid and is therefore considered to be better tolerated.
