Raab Algae Oil Omega-3 Capsules are purely plant-based. The algae oil is obtained through the fermentation of the single-celled microalga Schizochytrium sp. What is algae oil and what are omega-3 fatty acids?

Raab Algae Oil Omega-3 Capsules contain algae oil derived from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp., a single-celled algae that naturally produces the valuable omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). DHA is a hexaplenic fatty acid, and EPA is a pentaplenic fatty acid. The algae oil is extracted as follows: Schizochytrium sp. is not harvested from the sea, but is cultivated under controlled, physiological conditions in special tanks in an aqueous environment. 

Omega-3 fatty acids are, in part, essential polyunsaturated fatty acids which the body cannot produce entirely on its own and must therefore obtain from food. They are a natural component of every single cell in our body (particularly the cell membrane). Incidentally, ‘unsaturated’ means that the fatty acid contains double bonds. A double bond causes the fatty acid to ‘bend’ at that point, meaning it takes up more space in the cell membrane.

Important omega-3 fatty acids include ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which is found in plant-based foods such as linseeds, chia seeds and nuts, as well as DHA and EPA, which are mainly found in oily fish and algae.
