Iodine – The forgotten trace element

Iodine is a trace element and performs numerous functions in the body. Among other things, iodine is a component of the thyroid hormone thyroxine and is therefore vital for the proper functioning of the metabolism. All of the body’s organ systems rely on this trace element. Iodine’s functions also include:

• Maintaining normal skin.
• Production of thyroid hormones,
• function of the nervous system,
• Cognitive functions,
• energy metabolism,

The body cannot produce this trace element itself and it must be obtained from food. People often forget that iodine must be consumed in sufficient quantities.

Iodine intake in Central Europe

Soils in Central Europe are considered to be low in iodine, which is why iodine is added to ordinary table salt. This is intended to prevent a general iodine deficiency amongst the population. Foods containing significant amounts of iodine are mostly of marine origin. Foods that help meet the daily iodine requirement include:

• Mussels.
• Cod,
• plaice,
• haddock,
• seaweed,
• seaweed,

The daily requirement for iodine depends on age and certain lifestyle factors. Adults require between 180 and 200 µg of this trace element per day. Pregnant and breastfeeding women need more iodine, as they also pass it on to their child. They require between 230 and 260 µg of iodine daily.
