- Carnitine is a non-essential, water-soluble amino acid with vitamin-like properties. By "non-essential" we mean that under normal conditions the body can produce carnitine itself from the amino acid lysine in the liver and kidneys with the help of the amino acid methionine and with the help of vitamin C. Carnitine is also required for a number of enzymatic processes. In addition, iron, vitamin B6 and niacin are required for a number of enzymatic processes. Only the L-forms of carnitine can be utilised by humans.
