- BioActive B12 are round chewable tablets or lozenges with a pleasant peppermint flavour. Each tablet contains 600 micrograms of methylcobalamin, which is vitamin B12 in its active form. The tablets can be sucked or chewed. When the tablet is sucked, absorption occurs mainly via the oral mucosa. The dosage is 1-2 tablets daily. The dosage is high in relation to the set reference dosage, but is not associated with a risk of overdose.
- Vitamin B12 in the form of cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin must be converted into one of the active forms in the body before it can be utilised. This activation usually decreases with age, but can also decrease for other reasons. Because methylcobalamin contains a methyl group, which is needed to fulfil its functions, it is more effective than inactive forms.
- It is not uncommon for doctors to administer vitamin B12 as an injection into a muscle. In this way, the effect is not inhibited by the absence of intrinsic factor or reduced intestinal absorption. However, research has shown that a high dose of vitamin B12 in the form of lozenges or chewable tablets can also be effectively absorbed via the oral mucosa, bypassing normal absorption via the stomach and intestines. It does not appear to reduce absorption when the tablets are chewed.
